Media
Protean offers a range of community media solutions that can be used as an educational, training and a
socio-economic development tool to reach remote rural communities with no formal education, and little
tech-awareness. It can be used to provide formal or practical educational programs and permits
local event programming in local languages and dialects. It is particularly relevant to
population groups with strong oral traditions and can serve as a low cost educational tool for all
ages, across cultural and language-barriers. Besides Community Media, Protean is also well-versed in the use of DVB and MPEG-2/4 technologies and the use of these technologies in the new IPTV/streaming context.
Community Media:
One way of reaching out to communities lacking in formal education, is to use low-power, transportable antennas operating at sub-watt to a watt level and operate community FM Radio broadcasting. This approach allows inexpensive FM radios in households in the radius 10km of to come alive, which can then be used for spreading health awareness, voter outreach, peace-keeping etc. Alternately, by leveraging 2.4GHz unlicensed bands, community TV solutions can also be provisioned for communities within a radius of 10km. Repeaters and higher power transmitters can be used to achieve up to 30 km radius.
Community FM and TV broadcasting equipment are housed in transportable-cases and are designed for a few hours of operation per day with low start-up and operating/maintenance costs. They are intuitive to use and no extensive training is required for its operators. They feature local content production, insertion and broadcast capabilities. They can be provisioned with laptop and software which allows for format conversions and automated broadcast scheduling and play-out. The compact, easily transportable design even lends itself to be installed in vehicles for providing service in areas where addressable population may be spread out across several villages/communities.
Protean has innovatively combined such community broadcasting stations with VSAT-based file-delivery solutions to craft re-broadcasting solutions wherein content produced anywhere in the world can be delivered to targeted local/rural communities. Such systems can also be integrated with local community safety services that may be connected to either off-air or satellite program feeds to fill in off hours of operation.
